This author has done an outstanding job of building on the fairy-tale and really approaching it from a warm, human perspective. Great, clearly written characters, exciting plot-twists and strong, clean structure. The choice of writing first-person-present-tense is pretty bold, and I've seen many fail in the attempt, but I think she really nailed it. It's so easy to fall into the traps of being cliche or too cute with this sort of material, but each time she seemed in danger of it, the author neatly side-stepped it by seeking the heart of the characters.Beyond being simply caught up in the terrific story being told, I was delighted with the smattering references to other tales and folk-lore, as well as herbalism and other bits of yore. It's like reading Kay's novels and being rewarded with the rich little gems of his research woven into them.
I truly think this is a marvelous first-novel. A terrific story that shows all the ear-marks of an author who can only grow into fuller and richer work in the future.
I can't wait to read her next!!!

I like this book from the start. It really hooked me in the first several chapters. The only down side to it was that wished the author had expanded the main character more the older she grew. On the whole I lked the book and would recommend it to a friend. This author's writing has come along way in the last several years. I look forward to her writing another book, maybe even keeping these chacters.
If you like Tolkien or Grimm, this book is worth a look. Although "Pelzmantel" does not quite have the level of action of "Lord of The Rings", I was still very captivated and did not want to put the book down. It was very easy to see why the author, K. A. Laity, won Clive Barker's "Lord Of Illusions" contest for her story "Revelation".
I've been a fan of Laity's writing ever since I read one of her stories in New World Finn. This lady knows how to tell a story! I like character driven tales and the characters in Pelzmantel are very well-rounded.
Kate's got a fine ear for dialogue, and the plot is well developed, too. Pelzmantel is a re-telling of an old Grimm Brothers' story called "Allerleirau." The story is told from the viewpoint of Nanna, the Irish witch who cares for Princess Hallgerd when her mother dies.
Kate's extensive knowledge of medieval times and magic makes the world she writes about spring to life. It doesn't surprise me at all to hear that she won Clive Barker's Lords of Illusions contest. Peltzmantel is a wonderful tale!
Pelzmantel, Kate Laity's first novel, uses Danish folklore to tell a fascinating story of magick, a princess in exile, a wicked mage, and other events and persons not usually found in contemporary fiction. The story is told from the point of view of a centuries-old Irish witch, Carae Mna, known to her charges as "Nanna." Medieval magick plays a major role, from geniune herbal cures to complex prognoxtications about the dangers facing the young princess and those who help her. And this information is real, or as real as it was in its own time . . .
Pelzmantel, which means "fur coat," portrays women's experiences in the medieval world in a very realistic manner, since the author has done extensive literary research in the field. Peltzmantel spins an exciting tale that will keep you awake reading far into the night. Ms. Laity has written and published many short stories which include magic and the occult, and she has a great ear for dialogue as well as excellent descriptive powers. I feel as if I know how spring smells in medieval Denmark.
If you want entertainment, excitement, and foreign adventure, try Pelzmantel. It has the charm and enchantment of "Lord of the Rings" but is much shorter and minus the deluge of carnage. It's available online for about $16.00 from Spilled Candy Books, or right here from
