Midwinter Blood The Malin Fors Thrillers Mons Kallentoft Books
This is a murder thriller I will not forget. The main character is a 30 something female detective. She is well developed and very believable. I like her and I will be following her in Mons Kallentoft's other books "Summer Death" and "Autumn Killing". This author is from Sweden and his writing style reminds me of Stieg Larsson (author of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"). Both authors are journalists and I have to wonder how much of their fiction stories draw from "Real" life crime. If you have a squeamish stomach be forewarned the details are disgusting. I love reading thrillers. I got 90% through before getting a handle on who the serial killer was.Tags : Amazon.com: Midwinter Blood (The Malin Fors Thrillers) (9781451642476): Mons Kallentoft: Books,Mons Kallentoft,Midwinter Blood (The Malin Fors Thrillers),AtriaEmily Bestler Books,1451642474,Mystery & Detective - General,Thrillers - General,Murder;Investigation;Fiction.,Police;Sweden;Fiction.,Suspense fiction.,FICTION Mystery & Detective General,FICTION Thrillers General,FICTION Thrillers Suspense,Fiction,Fiction - Espionage Thriller,Fiction-Mystery & Detective,GENERAL,General Adult,Investigation,MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE FICTION,Murder,Mystery fiction,MysterySuspense,Police,SWEDISH NOVEL AND SHORT STORY,Sweden,Thrillers - Crime,Thrillers - Suspense,United States
Midwinter Blood The Malin Fors Thrillers Mons Kallentoft Books Reviews
It starts slowly and a bit confusing, with voices of the dead intermixed with the actual dialogue. I "almost" put the book down. Then I "got it". I began to understand and feel the emotions of the characters, living and dead! When you finally get into the rhythm of Kallentoft's thrilling pace of evil beyond imagination, you're hooked! Enjoy a great story with strong characters. I'll read it again.
The story is complex and introduced me to a new inspector. Pay attention to the names.
This is the first of his Detective Malin Fors novels. Her character is strong, intelligent and very human. While the novel takes some time to 'get into', it has a complicated plot that is much more satisfying than the CSI crime dramas. It's hard to work out who did it. You follow the clues with the detectives, nothing is too obvious. It's set in midwinter Sweden in a provincial town not too far, just enough, from Stockholm. We are introduced to some Norse mythology as one possible 'lead', however it is not culturally distant from any other western society. It could be Northern USA in winter or Cooma/Jindabyne in Australia. An intricate and interesting detective novel.
I only "discovered" this author, Mons Kallentoft, when I picked up "Midwinter Sacrifice" for the first time last year. To date I've read the others out by this author #2 "Summertime Death" and #3 "Autumn Killing". So looking forward to buying and reading #4 "Savage Spring" (I believed this was released in the UK and Australia this month). Love the details that the author brings to this thriller and can't wait for his next book!
A strong debut by a new voice out of Sweden. Kallentoft peoples his story with credible characters, a harsh, unforgiving milieu, a gruesome crime and a palpable sense of cold. Set in early February of what seems to be the coldest winter in recent memory, the story follows Superintendent Malin Fors and her colleagues on the Linkoping Police force as they attempt to unravel the long-buried secrets of a brutal family on the fringes of Swedish society. Complicating Fors' efforts are the competing influences of an estranged husband, a teenaged daughter and a journalist who seems to come in and out of her life as it suits him (or aids him in pursuit of a story). The shifting perspective of the narrative is the only real misstep in this book. Otherwise, for die-hard fans of the Nordic thriller or newcomers to the genre, this book belongs in a rightful place alongside such luminaries as Mankell, Lackberg, Nesbo and Indridasson.
Do not like the switching persona in this novel. The principal Malin keeps moving from the present situation to past memories. The story line switches from the detectives point of view to the corpse's voice. Maybe this was because this was the first book in the series so introducing the characters is useful. I will try one more in the series before making a final decision. It was hard to keep track of the main story.
A new "fave" series for me. I hope to find more like this by Kallentoft.
A body is found hanging in the woods midwinter. Who would hang a 300+ pound body in the woods? Why? And who would have the means? Is it the local "devil worshipers"? Is it someone else in the victim's lonely life - there don't seem to be too many choices until digging deeper and deeper.
Malin Fors is focused and dedicated and she won't let go until she gets to the roots. This book has an interesting difference - the dead man speaks throughout the book - interspersed within the police procedural. An intriguing way to provide us with additional details as we race along with Malin to solve the mysteries.
