Fiction, it is an interesting thing. If an author ignores human weakness, human greatness, base desires, conflict, real emotions amplified and assigned to created and not real people then the author may as well write about what happened to anyone for twelve minutes last Tuesday. Probably boring for 90+% of humanity. To read about how fictional characters with amplified egos and emotions act in fictionally amplified conflict in compressed time where everything hinges on a fictional decision is what brings me, as a reader, back to fiction time and time again. It makes me turn pages to read what some fictional character does (that I would never do) in these situations. And this book is a page turner with amplified emotions and egos doing dangerous things with loose morals in compressed time. Cornwell is a master of this kind of writing. This book is an entertaining fast read that is packed with fictional action and fictional character that none of us is likely (we can't travel to this time anyway) to ever do and if we were doing it, we would probably stop. Not these characters in this book though. They keep doing it, they keep going and doing unbelievable things that Cornwell has convinced us as a reader is completely possible for his characters and I admire that storytelling ability in this author. I highly recommend this book. I suggest you should really start at the beginning of the series and read all the way through though. Great entertainment for such a low price.

This is another of the GREAT Sharpe Series from Bernard Cornwell. I just love reading these adventures and will always be a Bernard Cornwell Fan !!
This story has all the elements of a well told adventure deception, love, revenge and untold riches captured and restored.
Some new twists and turns from a plot perspective. You know Sharpe is going to make it, but you are not quite sure how, and Cornwell does not disappoint.
I read this series, start to finish. Chronological order. Every book is excellent . the story in full is excellent.
All winter, rainy days, fireplace, coffee, cookies. Great time spent with wonderful characters, good and bad.
The stories built into history lessons were just masterful.
Sorry, Do to so many read, I am copying one review for all. Singularly or Collectively, you can not go wrong with Bernard Cornwell.
I've yet to read one of Cornwells books that I wouldn't give five stars too. Every one of them, whether the protagonist is Richard Sharpe, Uther Ragnarson, or Nate Starbuck is thoroughly enjoyable.

If I was stranded on an island and could only have one author's work I would take survivalist manuals. If I could only bring fiction I would take Cornwells books.
I love all of the Richard Sharpe books. I hate having to search for the chronological order of the books, so I'm providing it here so people don't have to search.

The 17th Richard Sharpe adventure. The French are in retreat in Spain. All the elements are here in Bernard Cornwell's fine series Sharpe's love interest in the beautiful La Puta Durada (the golden whore), the evil El Matarife, who has never lost a fight with a chain and a knife, and the rousing battle of Vitoria, Spain, in which Sharpe's riflemen must capture a well-guarded town against all odds. A fine story.
